We enjoy reading aloud and discussing the works of a wide range of poets, both ancient and modern. The poet's life is important, so we all try to find out as much as possible about his or her background, before we read our own choice of poems.
In recent years, we have studied the poetry of several American poets e.g. Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and TSĀ Eliot. We have enjoyed the poetry of Lord Byron, the WW1 poets, Robert Herrick, and Robert and Elizabeth Barret Browning.
Sometimes, members of the group choose the poems, so one month we may study a variety of styles and topics of poets from different centuries. Other times, I ask for poems on a particular subject e.g. the countryside, or summer, or towns.
We have appreciated poetry from other languages, in translation. In the past, we have read Homer's Odyssey, and poetry by the modern Greek, Cavafy. Obviously, some works cover more than one month's study.
Members of the group enjoy meeting together, to share the enjoyment of hearing, reading and appreciating poetry.
